Otways Tourist Park features multiple BBQ areas strategically placed throughout the grounds, giving everyone easy access to quality barbecue facilities without crowding. These communal cooking spots save you from lugging your own equipment and provide proper cooking surfaces that beat balancing a portable barbie on uneven ground.
Our BBQ areas feature gas barbecues with push-button ignition – no fiddling with matches or firelighters needed. Each BBQ station includes multiple hotplates and grill sections, allowing several families to cook simultaneously. The gas is supplied and maintained by the park at no extra charge to guests.
Each BBQ area includes preparation benches for food prep and serving, making it easy to organise ingredients and plates. Picnic tables and seating are positioned nearby, creating natural gathering spots for meals. Most areas have overhead shelter or are positioned near trees for shade, though some open areas are available for those who prefer cooking under the stars.
Hotplates heat evenly and maintain temperature well, while grill sections are perfect for those authentic char marks on your snags. Temperature controls allow for proper cooking rather than the “charcoal or raw” options of some camping BBQs.
BBQ stations are distributed across the park to ensure convenient access from all accommodation areas. Main stations are located near the camp kitchen, playground areas, and at regular intervals through the powered and unpowered sites. Cabin guests have dedicated BBQ areas closer to their accommodation.
Each area is positioned to minimise smoke drift to nearby sites while maintaining easy access. Lighting is provided for evening cooking, though bringing a torch for checking meat properly is recommended. Paths to BBQ areas are generally sealed or well-formed gravel, suitable for carrying plates and food even after rain.
The park provides the BBQ and gas, but everything else is BYO. Essential items include cooking utensils (spatula, tongs, fork), plates and servingware, cooking oil or spray, and cleaning materials for before and after use. Aluminium foil is handy for fish or vegetables, and a meat thermometer ensures food safety.
Don’t forget basic supplies like paper towel, hand sanitiser or wipes, rubbish bags for your waste, and containers for leftovers. A sharp knife and cutting board save prep time, while marinades and seasonings make the difference between good and great BBQ.
The golden rule: clean the BBQ after use. It’s simple courtesy and ensures the next person doesn’t have to scrape off your burnt remains. While the hotplate is still warm (not hot), scrape off food residue with the provided scraper. A splash of water on the warm plate helps lift stubborn bits.
The park provides basic cleaning equipment at each BBQ station – usually a scraper and scrubbing brush. Some guests bring their own BBQ wipes for a thorough clean. Don’t use harsh chemicals or steel wool that might damage the cooking surface. If you find a dirty BBQ, let reception know rather than suffering in silence.
