Your Home Kitchen Away From Home - Just With Better Views

The camp kitchen at Otways Tourist Park is where the magic happens. It’s the real stuff – bacon sizzling at 7am, pasta bubbling for dinner after a big day at the beach, and strangers becoming mates over borrowed salt and travel stories.

What Makes Our Kitchen Work

We’ve got all the basics covered – multiple cooktops so you’re not waiting ages for a burner during the dinner rush, ovens for when you’re feeling ambitious, and microwaves for the quick and easy option. The fridges have decent space including proper freezer sections, because nobody wants their ice cream turning to soup or their beer getting warm.

Everything’s under cover in a spacious area with plenty of bench space for food prep. There’s hot water for washing up, sinks that actually drain properly, and enough room that you’re not climbing over people while cooking. We provide the basic cooking equipment and cleaning gear, though most people bring their favourite pan or sharp knife from home.

The Social Hub

Here’s the thing about camp kitchens – they become the social centre of the park. While you’re waiting for your pasta to boil, you’ll chat to the family at the next cooktop who just got back from the Twelve Apostles. Someone’s always got a tip about a great breakfast spot in Apollo Bay or which walking track is best with kids.

School holidays and weekends it gets busy around dinner time. That’s when it becomes properly social – kids making friends while parents swap travel stories, someone usually offering around their extra snags from the BBQ, maybe a bit of good-natured competition over whose spag bol smells better.

Making the Most of It

The kitchen’s open from early morning until late evening. Early birds get the peaceful breakfast shift – just them, the birds, and the smell of bacon. Evening’s when it comes alive. The dinner rush can get busy but that’s part of camping – everyone mucking in together, sharing the space, kids running between tables.

Smart campers keep it simple. One-pot wonders, pasta with jar sauce, pre-marinated meat ready for cooking. This isn’t the place for complicated recipes requiring seventeen different pots. Save that for home. The joy is being able to cook a hot meal without dealing with wind blowing out your camp stove or rain drowning your BBQ.

The Unwritten Rules

Clean as you go – nobody wants to deal with your mess. The washing up gear’s all there, it takes two minutes, and it keeps everyone happy. Don’t monopolise equipment when others are waiting. Label your stuff in the fridge unless you want it going walkabout. And remember there’s people sleeping in tents nearby, so keep the noise reasonable after dark.

If something’s not working, let reception know. We can’t fix what we don’t know about. Same goes for when supplies run low – dish soap, scrubbers, that sort of thing. We keep it stocked but sometimes things disappear faster than expected.

What to Bring

Your good knife – camp kitchen knives are never sharp enough. Tupperware for leftovers. Your favourite pan if you’re particular. Coffee gear if you’re fussy about your morning brew. Teatowels because they always seem to vanish. And patience for the busy times.

Weather and Comfort

The kitchen’s protected from the weather, which matters more than you’d think. Nothing worse than trying to cook dinner in the rain or wind. Winter nights can get chilly in there but the cooking keeps things warm. Summer evenings can get warm with all the stoves going, but there’s usually a breeze through.

Kids are welcome but need watching – hot stoves and running don’t mix. Most families set up at one of the larger tables where kids can colour or play while dinner’s cooking. It becomes its own little routine – kids know dinner happens in the camp kitchen and they can play with their new friends after eating.
