Hopetoun Falls delivers what every waterfall should a proper 30-metre drop that looks spectacular in photos and even better in real life. About 20 minutes from Gellibrand via Beech Forest, this walk offers two ways to see the falls: a gentle stroll to the upper platform, or a knee-testing descent to the base.
Head through Beech Forest and follow Hopetoun Falls Road. The unsealed section’s fine for regular cars but leave the big van at the park. Small car park with picnic tables. Busy on autumn weekends when everyone’s chasing waterfall shots.
The beauty here is choice. Upper platform sits 20 metres from the car park wheelchair accessible, no sweat required. Perfect for anyone with dodgy knees or restless toddlers. Want the full experience! Take 200 proper steps down to the lower platform. Handrails the whole way, winding through tree ferns and alongside the Aire River. Takes 10 minutes down through gorgeous rainforest. From the bottom platform, spray hits your face and the thundering water drowns out conversation. After good rain, it’s absolutely beautiful. Those 200 steps become a different story heading back up. Nothing dangerous, just steady climbing that’ll have you stopping to “admire the forest” while your legs recover. Double the time for going up.
Winter through spring delivers maximum flow when the Otways’ rain kicks in properly. The falls rarely stop completely thanks to reliable rainfall, but they’re definitely more impressive after wet weather. Early morning or late afternoon gives the best light through the canopy.
Allow an hour total, more if you’re keen on photos. No toilets here nearest at the Redwoods 10 minutes away. The upper platform means everyone sees the falls regardless of fitness. Lower platform needs moderate fitness and decent shoes wet steps get slippery. Crimson rosellas flash through the trees, lyrebirds scratch around below, and the rainforest is proper pristine.
Hopetoun Falls works perfectly with the Californian Redwoods (10 minutes) or Triplet Falls (15 minutes). Smash out Hopetoun early for the best light, grab coffee in Beech Forest, then tackle another walk. For park guests, this is the must-see waterfall and fair enough. The dual viewing options mean nobody misses out, and that 30-metre drop delivers every time. Just remember to bring water for those steps.
